Statement: The idea for this piece was inspired by a technique used by pastel artist, Susan Ogilvie. She prepares the surface of a board with a textured/gritty paint that leaves the lines of the brush strokes visible. She usually uses a bright color, such as red or orange in this under layer, over which she paints with pastels. This results in lines of the underlying color showing through the painting, giving it an interesting visual effect.
